i'ercy Faulkner surrendered to his bail yesterday morning to answer in the Court, liawera, a charge 'if common assault upon two children of tender years, and also a charge of theft of beads' and cards from the Church of England Sunday School. Sergeant McGrirth asked for a remand unti'l next Monday. .Mr O'Dea, who appeared for tho accused, offered no objection, but asked for bail. The remand was granted and tail was alowed— the accused himself in £-5 and one (surety of a like amount. As the result of complaints to the police the accused was arrested on Saturday n'ght, and owing to the holiday yesierdav he was bailed cut to appear this morning. "Neither locks bad they to their doors, nor bars, to their windows." Thus was described Arcadia, 'home of the happy, Sue-ill a condition of affairs represents in New Plymouth not Arcadia, but the result of the operations of the hoodlums who frequent Kawaroa Park by night, ' The locks on Lee doors of the bungalow liavu been forced; tools nvslaid; and swings and other property < broken and abused. It is small salisfaction to the people of tho district that their efforts to make a children's playground should be nullified by young fellows who prove by their actions that they have not .vet become men. The Society appeals to the public to see Ihjit this public property is respected.' 'f it were possible to lay hold of those individuals who broke the locks and the wing-boats these gentry would have a ivelv time. The provision of a couple of lamps along ihe Tiseh Avenue and at the bungalow would act as a deterrent, 'or larrikins "love darkness rather than tight" for the perpetration of their misdeeds.
The brutality of the 'jeiT.uin is shown by the following s.ory:— When the Teutonic hordes entered' Brussels they approached the convent of the tracret Heart order. Two uf tihe sisters approached one of the windows of the convent to see if any damage was being wrought upon the convent or grounds, when the Cerman.s lii'ed upon them, killing both sisters oulrijii',. They next invaded the convent, acting in an uproarious manner. Suddenly they were addressed in their native tongue by several German sisters of Uio order, and the effect was magical; they became at oncm quite subdued. The Mother General of the order (Mather Janet Kr.skme fStiiar!) who belongs to a noted Scottish family, and who was in Auckland at tlie commencement of this your, was in the house at Brussels at the ilmc of the raid, and was urgently pressed to go to England. She (lid so, but- th" shock of the Oorman raid was so great tbat the Mother Oenenl died, another victim to German brutality. .Speaking at ihe Anglican Diocesan Synod at Auckland last week on u motion asking the churches to assist flic No-linece movement, the Rev. A. 11. Coi\ile deprecated the in loducLion at tho prevent time of a motion of a distinctly provjeative character, calculated to arouse passionate lcsea/ment m many who conscientiously to whai ihey considered intolerable ' tyranny. Prohi'bitionisu apparently failed ■;<) recognise that the opponents of prohibition were not all nersomlly interested. "Moderates'"' were lumped together, and labelled "liquor party." Tlie 190S resolution had aroused resentment in many churchmen, and bad he 'then been :i layman or one of the imregrnevates he would have felt inclined to shake his fist In 'lhe face of anyone who attempted to dictate to him in that way. ITe dip waled the use of patriotic feeling at the present t'me for the purpose of Tine motion, for he felt that if prohibition were carried when the minds of Unpeople were enneentriited elsewhere i: would be hwg resented. ITe was glad hat branches of the Moderate Lrac.ie had been formed 'throughout the Dominion. National prohibition might suit pcopie like th ( , Germain, but Englishmen were not ready to submit to vexations. irritaCnix, and (to him) unnecc*?ary prohibition.
