A forceful appeal for systematic g:v- I in<; was made by an elderly farmer—'.in called'himself a "small cockatoo"—at. the Belgian fund meeting in Auckland on Wednesday afternoon. .Speaking with a strong foreign accent, the appellant said that lie had come (10 miles to give expression to his feelings, lie owned 100 acres in the country; -he had given a half per cent, of what he possessed to the patriotic fund; lie had a'rendv donated .a half per cent, to the Belgian fund; and he was prepared, during the season, to give 10 per, cent, of his output in wool, butter, etc. Further, l:c had sent his son to the war. The speaker said that if hatred to Germany stood for anything, lie felt that he had a right to address the meeting| ''You think that by raising £50,000 for the patriotic fund you have done well," added the visitor, "hut I am sorry I can't agree with you. If the Allies should not win, how much more would we be prepared to give to get back under Uritish rule?" Thii fervent speech was followed, as it had been punctuated, by rousing applause.
