GYMKHANA AT WAITARA.
The patriotism of the resident's in -the Waitara district wns much in evujpiyn v«terfav W h*n . fc Gymkhana was carried out oa the Recreation Ground, whereby the Patriotic Fund will benefit by about £3O. There were ovtr 400 people present, and though there was net much sunshine, weather conditions were favourable, the consequence being that the Labor Day holiday was thoroughly enjoyed and put to an excellent use. The arrangements reflected much credit on .the local Patriotic Committee, and were carried out 111 ;t most praiseworthy manner, thanks to the zeal and energy of awiiling baud of workers among whom the secretary (Mr Humphries), Messrs. Hawkins, Nelson, Frascr and others were conspicuous. The young folks had what proved to be a very welcome change in the shape of donkey rides, Mr t'lannagan having kindly lent four of his donkeys for the tiny, an act that was greatly appreciated by the Committee who desire to publicly thank him therefor. Special thanks are also due to Mr Frascr who devoted the whole day to the management of the donkeys, a task lhat must have severely taxed his | energies, but gave delight to the children.
The following are Ibe results: — Donkey Race.—Scorcher Jones 1.
Three Paced Race. —This was the moft exciting race of the day. Lash and Pennington being neck and neck all the wav and the judge found it impossible to givo either the advantage so they were bracketed first.
Hunters Leaping.—A. J. Kibby's Victor 1, G. Foreman's Red Gauntlet 2. There were eight competitors and the jumping was very creditable.
Rifle Exercise. —The Inglewood team alone competed, giving a very good display which evoked great applause. Despatch Competition.—This event was also well competed for, resulting in D. Stockman on Ridicule gaining first prize, and A. J. Kibby on Victor coming second.
Tug of War—Hunt Club 1, Maoris 2.
V.C. Competition—This evciu was watched with keen interest, tile result being: X. C. Pepperell 1, time lmin 0 3-5 see; Roach 2, time lmin 4 3-ssec; E. .J. Rook 3, time lmin 25 2-ssec.
Despatch Trot Handicap.—W. Topliss' Tip Top, owe losee, 1; i\V. Paul's Kate, 20see, 2. This was a very good contest but the result was never in doubt.
Maiden Leaping.—There were seven entries for this event, which produced some good jumpers, the award -being: A. H. ltalcombe's Larakau 1; R. Pcpperell's Batchelor's Button 2.
Gun Capture.—Three teams of four men each entered for this unusual race, N. C. PcppcreU's team proving the victors, while L. C. .Jennin's team came second.
Steeplechase Leaping-.—There were eight competitors in ibis even which proved a. very keen contest, R. Pepperell's Ratchclol's Button being first, and W. McKenzie's Nelly second. Despatch Trot.—This was another good event won by Pukere's Uren:ii (20s?c), Laddie (losee), being second.
