QUEEN MARY'S THANKS TO NEW ZEALAND. Wellington, Last Night. In reply to Her Excellency's cable, announcing the composition and despatch of the first consignment of contributions, in answer to Queen Mary's appeal, Her Majesty has sent, through the Secretary of State for the Colonies, the following message:— "Her Majesty the Queen sends her sincero tlmnks far the generous response to her appeal." FILLING THE GAPS. SAMOAN GARRISON LONGS FOR EUROPE. Auckland, Last Night. !A. desire, has been expressed by some of the men in the garrison force in Samoa that they should be permitted to roluntccr for service in Europe, and an assurance was given by the Minister for Defenco on Saturday that the desired opportunity will Iw given to them. Ho explained that half the Maori contingent now in trainine, at lAvondalo has been formed for garrison duty in Samoa. Wihen it ia ready for service, up to 250 men will be relieved, to enable them to join the drafts despatched to reinforce the main expeditionary force. Mr Allen stated that the first reinforcement draft now training at Trentham -will be dt-
