HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE. The High Commissioner reports, under .jute London, October 20 (7.5 p.m.):— Official. —The Belgian army is maintaining its position on the line of the Yser, where tiiey were violently attacked. Actions are taking place in the region of Ypres, where the Allied forces are engaged. The Germans continue to hold strongly the advances to Lille in the direction of Armentieres, Fouines and La Bassee. The enemy vainly attempted to repulse the Allies at the Meusc. Progress was made at various points of the front on the 10th.
Wellington, Last Night. Tha following cab.e message has been received by the Prime Minister from the High Commissioner, dated London, October 22, 1914, 12.40 a.m.:—
Official. Throughout Tuesday the enemy made vigorous counter-attacks against the Aides' front, but were driven back, suff'Ting considerable losses. The Belgian army in particular dtscikguished itself by a spirited defence of its positions. For vae jast few days the Belgian army has been in the trenches, holding a line of thirty kilometres with the greatest determination against heavy odds. The Belgians made successful counter-attacks.

.Lyndon, October 22 (2.10 a.m.) Oliicia).—The Admiralty announces that the monitors Severne, Humour and Mersey were recently engaged in operations on tie Belgian coast, firing on the right flank of the German army. Owini to their light draught, they have been able to contribute materially to the success of operations in this district, abundantly justifying their acquisition on the outbreak of war. Detachments with machine guns 'Were landed from these vessels to assist in the defence ot Nieujort, performing meritorious service. ANGLO-JAPANESE COURT'ESIiiS. London. October 21.
