FITZEOY GREEN OPJME3D. The form*l opening of the groea took flasa yesterday, and never lhas there 'been a larger attendance of ladiea on the opening day than were present on ,t!aia occasion. The scene was brilliant and animated, being greatly enhanced by the improvements llhak have keel carried out since last season.

The president, Mr. Fred. Jackson, com'menced the proceedings by distributimg the prue* woa last year, -which. weVe as follows: —Uhampion Cup, Mr. Mora-! Hiead; handicap pairs', Messrs S. Smith and J. Hill; progressive pairs, medals, Messrs S. Rennen and E. Lister; beginners' prize, Mr. Wood. In his address to those present, Mr. Jackson heartily welcomed I*hem to tho opening of ,ihe green, which was always a red-letter day to bowlers. He paid a warm tribute of praise to 'the green warden, Mr. S. Smith, and the caretaker for having got tlhe green into such good condition at an early date, whereby the alub had been able to offer members of other clubs an opportunity of playing before their own greens were ready. He eulogised Mr. Healy'o services ..s past president, and gave 'him' creu* ■• bringing the club to such a satisfactory and prosperous condition', and in improvise tho grounds. Allusion was made to the formation of a croquet lawn for tho ladies, and a hope expressed .that the club would enjoy a successful season.

Mr. IW. J. Penn, wesident of the New Plymouth Club, it&auked the Fitzroy club for its kind hospitality, and congratulated i3iem on tho improvements earned out, as well as on the condition of the green. He hoped the club would put ia strong teamg for 'the tournament and 'banner matches, and wished theon success in the coming season, adding that they would always be welcome on the town green. Mr. J. D. Sole, on behalf of the West End Club, endorsed the previous speaker's remarta.

Tho president then formally announced that the green was open for plav, and called on Miss Jackson to throw "bitty," an act wu.cu she Twrformed successfully amid tho applause of all prose**.
