The military authorities at Montreal have discovered a widespread plot, backed by ample funds from the Austrian Government, to smuggle from the country the reservists, of whom there are 100,000 from Canada. Israel Stanhofer, a naturalised Britisher, has been arrested. He supplied the reservists with tickets and money, and instructed them ; to paes the border as Roumanians. This is the first treason case since the Riel tial in 1880.

Twenty thousand Austrians in Montreal are destitute, and soup kitchens are being opened.
