i The death occurred on Friday last at .Wellington of Dr. .Tames Simpson, M.D., C.M., formerly of Charleston and Westport. Tlio deceased was 08 years of age. ; The death in recorded by the Hawera Star of Mrs Sutherland, relict of the lato Alex. Sutherland, at the ripe old ago of S5 years. The}' formerly lived near Manaia and were well known to old Plains people. Major Thomas Sutherland, of Kapuni, is a son. I The position so long occupied by the late Mr Orton Stevens, as general manager of the Xationa! Mutual Life Association, has been filled by Mr P. W. Nicholson. The company's new general manager has been connected with life assurance for the last 30 years, of which 27 have been passed in the Sydney office. j An old and much-respected resident o( i Wellington died on Saturday, in the person of lira Annie Sloan, relict of the , late Mr James Sloan, who died some ; three months ago. The deceased lady, who was 74-years sf age, Was probably best lniown in connection with her religious and charitable work, and was always especially interested in missionary work in China, in wliich. field of Christian endeavor her brother, the late l!ev. .lames Anderson, was engaged fo( some time. i Captain Cardinal Sainty, one of Auckland's oldest residents and shipmaster?, ' died on Friday at his home at DevonI port. Captain Sainty was years' of age, and was born in London, lie came :to New Zealand in 154.3, as chief oDieer of the sailing .ship Siam. For some years ■the deceased commanded the Syren and ! traded regularly between Auckland and ; Newcastle. Subsequently he commanded several small sailing vessels trading on the Xew Zealand coasts. The deceased then entered the employ of tlie ; Auckland Harbor Board as pilot, in I which capacity lie acted for 2!) years. 'Ne left tlio service in IMS, and had lived in retirement ever since.
