C.J.C. STEWARDS' HANDICAP WEIGHTS. (By "Moturoa.")
As expected, Merry Roe topped the weights for the C.J.C. Stewards' Handi- < eap, but many good judges estimated that t!ic Hying duuyliter of Sonlt wor.ld get even more tluin".U.l. This represent., Tib more than weight-for-age, and seeing that tlie race in <|Uestion lias never iieen won with more than list, most people will be prepared to let the mare run against them. Vladimir won with !)sl in 1!104, and I'enates (I'JOS) ami Kquitas (1910) each carried 8.10 to victory. Postillion beat Ventura over six furlongs at weight-for-age last December, and afterwards won the Newmarket Handicap at Ellerslie with S.lO in 1.13 4-5, beating, amongst others, lieldame 7.8, Talterley 8.0, Crown Pearl il.O, ami King 1-upin S.:>. In May last 'Postillion easily landed the Borough Handicap at YVangantii with 9.1, but the opposition was not very formidable. Still, with lib under wcight-for-age, his chances may have to be considered at Riceartun. Autumnus failed to win a race last season, but he ran second in the Challenge Stakes at Riccarton, and also in the Manawatu Stakes, in each case carrying 9st, and being beaten by Kmpera'dor by a head —the same old head, by the way! Clifford's sprinter is more lor less unsound, though recently he, has been sprinting fairly well. Palisade was a rare winner last season, scoring seven firsts and one second in a dozen starts. Most of his races were won in and about Duiiedin, ami his best time for six furlongs was 1.10. The son of Pallas has been carrying some great weights, but still might have got in with ,less in the Stewards'. Chortle •has been doing big things this 'spring, and reads -well in with 8.1-. . His recent victory at Hastings stamps him as a very speedy nag. Crown Pearl, with Sib less, must be given a chance. The local nag has been dangerous with anything in the region of !)st, when racing in moderate company, and with S.!l reads well. Warstcp's showing at Dur.edin was too bud to be seriously considered. Despite her good track form 6he may not be as smart as last season. Anyway, both she and Reputation may be reserved for classic events. It is some time since Bleriot showed form to entitle her to B.D. In fact, bhe didn't win a race last season. First Glance, Chudic and Ladoga also look badly treated when compared with some of the I light-weights. Downham, Beldame and Sir Moseley stand out amongst the middle-weights (to use a boxing term), and Moulu looks most promising of the light-weights. A general survey of the situation makes it appear as if the winner will probably come from the centre of the handicap—Beldame and Sir Moseley appearing dangerous —and strongest » opposition may be thrown out by Postillion, Chortle, and possibly Crown Pearl. A good number of these horses will be running at Trejitham this week, and ionn there (and penalties) may icake conaideraUe differewe. 'l^l^,l
