HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE. EMDEN'S SUPPLY SHIPS TAKEN. The High Commissioner reports:— London, October 16, fi.4o p.m. Official.—The Admiralty reports that a British warship Bunk a German-Ham-burg steamer, the Markomannis, in the vicinity of Sumatra, and also eaptured and is taking to harbor the Greek steamer Poupoporos. Both vessels had been previously reported as co-operating with the Emden.
Official.—There is no change in the position in Ea9t Prussia. Fighting is proceeding from Warsaw along the Vistula Przomysl, and Bouth. to Dniester. The enemy's offensive on the Allies' right wing north of St. Die has been ehecked. Progress is recorded after the enemy's night attacks south-east of Verdun.
The. enemy's trenches were taken in the Rheims district. The Allies haye also advanced in the tentre, between the Oise and the Meusc, towards Craonnc. The position is unchanged in the Lens district. The enemy has marched westward from Antwerp, and reached Bruges and •Thielt districts. FRENCH ACTIVE IN ALSACE. The Premier has received the following from the High Commissioner:— Reliable.—Rome reports that the French have re-occupied Altkirch and threaten Mulhauecn. Amsterdam reports that tho French i hold an excellent position on the Alsatian frontier.
It is estimated that 100,000 Germans are in Ghent.
