WAITAKA. The Noith Taranalti Hiint Club propose holding a gymkana iu aid ot the Patriotic Fund on the 20th inst. (Labor Day). An a;tractive programme anil fine day are sure to draw a large attendance.
Mr Cyril Morton has presented to the Patriotic Committee for disposal, in aid of the funds, three pictures done by himself in pen and ink. The sketched are of an old English wayside scene, anil the work reflects great, credit on the artist.

The final of the series of the euchre ! parties promoted by the Clifton llow.n;,' Club was lield on Tuesday evening. The first lady's prize was won b> \hs McGonagle, second Mrs Mahon, third Mrs. lining. The first genticuuu s prize was won by Mr Redmond, second Mr Care, third Mr A. Simpson. The music was supplied by Mr Jack. Mr Buchanan acted a3 M.C.
INGLEWOOD. The final meeting of the Queen Carnival of Inglewood was held last night, when the executive laid before the general committee the report and statement of receipts and expenditure. The total receipts of the carnival were £570, whilo the total, expenses amounted to £240, of which the organiser (Mr W. Lints) received £l2O. After a few details of the financial statement had been discussed, the chairman (Mr Geo. Young) said it gave hiinii great pleasure to be able to hand over to the Fire Brigade the net amount of the carnival, £339. He referred to the excellent friendly feeling that had always existed be tween all the committees," and the efficient manner in which the whole proceedings had been carried out. He also presented the Brigade with a beautifully framed photo of the executive. and incidentally mentioned that they 3iad also presened similar ones to the Quern elect (Miss Irene Death), and the returning officer (Miss Urry). Captain Coldwell and Lieutenant McLaggan, in reply, said that the carnival had more " than realised the most sanguine expectations, and desired to sincerely thank all those who had worked so hard to achieve such an excellent result.
They trusted that with ahc funds available now lhey would bo able to keep more up-to-date in fire-fighting appl'ances and bousing accommodation. The members of the Brigade very mud appreciated the public support, and it gave them great encouragement Ho do «en bolter than in the past. Captain Coldwell asked that the public be represen ed by one member on the expenditure of the carnival funds. Mr George Young consented to act in that capacity.
While driving from the slaughterhouse to 'his shop on Friday morning, Mr T. •King of (King and Stibbs) had the misfortune to meet with an accident which might have been attended with more ■serious results. Owing to tttie backband breaking, Mr King was thrown forward under the cart and the wheel passed over hU foot. It is not ascertainable whether any bones were broken. However, I trust not.
OPUXAKJS. The annual meeting of the Opunake Croquet Club was 'held on Wednesday evening. Present: Mesdames Gould 'Welsh, Des Forges, Crawley, Brennan, Thompson, Grieg, Clarke, O'Brien, and Thorpe, Messrs W. C. Dudley and G. Hammond. ■ The president (Mr Dudley) presided. In the absence of the secretary (Miss Devury), Mrs Thorpe acted in that capacity. The balance-sheet 'showed a credit balance of £2O lis lid.
