Hanby, late of New Plymouth, and Mrs. K. 0. Robinson, of Stratford. On Tuesday evening, Mr. H. Spurdle was presented by the members of the Clifton Rowing Club with a sold watch and chain in recognition of 'his maiix years service as secretary.
On (Monday last Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Connett celebrated their colden wedding, the oceaaion boing celebrated by a faaw ily gathering at 1 which the eldest son, Mr. J. 8. The death is reported at Greymout'i* of Mr. John Dowling, of Paroa, at the age of eighty-one years. Deceased, who was a native of Tipperary, took part in the Otago gold rushes, being at Gabriel's Gnlly in the early 'sixties. He landed in llokitika in 1864, being one of the pioneers of the West Coast goldlields. Later ho settled in Paroa, where he lived with liis family for close on half a eentury. A Westport message says that tha cablegnuu announcing the escape of a Union officer from Antwero probably refers to Mr. A. Barr, a wellknown officer on Union stcamon*. Mrs. Barr was visiting her parents at Antwerj) prior to the declaration of war, Mr. Barr l«ft' London, but was only allowed to -proceed to Antwerp conditionally on signing on to assist in tho defence of tlie i%i if necessary. He did so m order to reach hfo wife and family, He has now appafimtly got back to 'London.
A Hamilton telegram reports tho death, in the Waikato Hospital, on Wednosday night, «f Mr. Walter Symes, exM.1., aged 63.
