THE SMALL BIRD NUISANCE.
To the 'Editor. Sir,—l wish to draw tho attention of Taranaki farmers to the urgent need of united action on their part in su|*> pressing the small bird nuisance. Oat account of tho increasing number of 'lbirde it is now well nigh a matter of' wnpoßW'bility to grow a successful grain wop of any kind. Therefore, if we want to rid ourselves of an enemy more Uttt liblc than noxious weeds, and mora dei vastating than blight, we shall have t$ adopt. something more drastic than w$ hitherto have done. Although the accliffl* atisation societies were responsible for introducing th,c peat, which seemed hajtmless at iirst, into our fair land, I do not hear of it doing aniyttiing to reduce' tpieir numibers, which are increasing itf millions. I would suggest that tht county council procure a quantity of poisoned rape seed, or anything thai birds would readily cat, and pass it out to farmers on call, so that each on*' could use a little in cropping. I m say I have tried poisoned wheat withou* success, as the wheat when poisone*. is not liked by the birds.—l am. etc. „■ , , C. WARMTH i Spotewoo.d October 12. ,
