An Auckland message states that I'a.tther Thomas lvohoc, priest, of Tuiakau, died on Saturday morning, aged 74.

The Rev. Clarence Eaton, of Richmond, Nelson, has been unanimously invited by the Methodist Central Mission at Dunedin to succeed the Rev. As Mr Eaton is invited to another circuit in Wellington, he cannot accept, but ho is willing to go to Dunedin if the conference appoints him. The Hon. Gilbert Carson, M.L.C., of Wanganui, and Mr W. Lock, of Nelson, have been re-elected members of the committee of advice of the Wellington Training College. The former represents the Taranaki, Wanganui, and Hawke's bay Education Boards, and the latter tho Nelson, Westland, Grey, and Marl.borough Education Boards. Consequent upon the retirement of Superintendent Mitchell, in charge of the Otago police district, Superintendent ■Dwyer, of Chris tchurdi, has temporarily hien appointed to the charge of both I Canterbury and Otago districts. During Superintendent Dwyer's absence in tne south Sub-inspector McKinnon will assume charge of the Canterbury district. Inspector Donovan, of Napier, is senior police insnector in New Zealand, and !ip M mentioned as likeiy to be appointed in charge of Otago. Tho ranks of the defence offioers in the Taranaki district have been greatlv depleted owing to the dispatch of the expeditionary forces, and appointments are now being made to fill the vacancies so that work can be carried on as usual. Lieutenant Crutch becomes area officer and adjutant of tihe 11th Regiment, with headquarters at New Plymouth. Sergeant-Major Hesp .ttr&nsfers from Waitara to ho area sergeant-major, and Color-Sergeant Gardin takes the position of regimental sergeant-major. ■Lieutenant W. 11. Humphrey, of Inglewood, lias been appointed sub-area, ser-geant-major for that district. Tho Wairarapa Daily News states that Mr. A. J. Boddington, of Johannesburg, and eldest son of Mr J. C. Boddington, of Masterton, has enlisted in Royston's Ilorso for service with tho South Af- | rican forces against the Germans in South-West, Africa. Royston's Ilorse is composed principally t>f New Zealandcn and Australians who fought in the Boer War. An old Wcllingtonian in the person of Mr Cas'iimore Freeth, who was sergeant-major in tho Second New Zea- I land South African Contingent, has also j gone on active sofvicc against the Germans in South Africa. Sir Freeth who is major of the Pretoria Infantry Corps, is the eldest son of Mrs Charles' Freeth, of Wellington.
