LONDON WOOL SALtK
KEEN COMPETITION.
TIIE EXPORT PROHIBITION
MAY BE EXTENDED.
London, October 6.
At the wool sales, 8043 bales wero offered, whereof 4433 were New Zealand. There was a huge attendance of the Home trade, but few French or Americans. Competition was exceedingly strong for all sorts, crossbreds fetching ten and fifteen per centum above the July closing rates except for choicest American sorts. The keenest demand was for slips and scoured which brought a twenty per centum advance. Merinos were weak owing to tho absence of Continental support. Tho . selling broker read the Government's prohibition relative to export, it being received with loud applause; also that the Government desired it known that buyers of wool for exportation to other countries would purchase at their own risk, as circumstances may render it necessary to extend the scope of the prohibition at any moment. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S RETORT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, October 8. Tho High Commisioner's cabled market report, under date London, October fl, is as follows:—The wool sales have commenced with great competition for all grades of medium and coarse crossbreds, but less demand for all grades of fine crossbreds and merinos. English manufacturers are the principal buyers. The manufacturers are busy with Government orders for blankets and khaki cloth. There are 25,500 bales of New Zealand wool catalogued. Medium and coarse crossbreds of all grades were V/ 3 d per lb higher, fine crossbreds of all grades unchanged, merinos Id per lb lower than tho closing rates of last sales. A Government proclamation has been issued prohibiting the export of wool to the Continent, excepting Russia, France, Belgium, Spain and Portugal.
