Murtro-Ferguson, the Go-vernor-General, opened the new Federal Parliament. There was a big at* tendance. Tho speech forecasted Bills to cover the expenditure l on the expeditionary forces; financial proposals to meet tho war conditions and dislocation of trade; also pensions for the forces on activeservice and their dependents. It ia proposed to ask Parliament for a free gift of £IOO,OOO to Belgium. Other proposals include an increase in tho loldnge and invalid pensions; and the provisions of pensions for widows and orphans. The tariff will be amended, and measures introduced to promote the pro-! auction and manufacture of raw- material and to secure, new markets; a uniform railway gauge; constitutional amendments regarding the initiative and lefexendum; development of the Northern Territory; and the creation of tV. line of Commonwealth steamers. /
