THE PROPOSED TOLL-GATE.

(To the Editoi.) Sir,—l eoe in to-day's ptper that the Tairanaki County Council hare decried to erect a weir according to the plan el Messrs. fifladden and Palmer to (protect the Wniwakaiho bridge, at an estimated cost of £1370, or with tile addition proposed by the Council of another £i' 29 With thi« I find no fault, as without doubt the bridge must 'he strengthened and protected. The suggestion to ereet 6. toll-gato—a most relirogr&die step--ia open to much objection. No obstruction ought to be put in the way of traffic, which should be absolutely free. The Council have only themselves to blame for the present difficulty. They have been talking stone from the bod of the river just below the bridge for years, thus lowering it, and now the penalty has 1o be paid owing to tlieir lack of foresight.—l am, etc., •JOIM J. BATES.
