INGLEWOOD NEWS.

(From a Correspondent.) An outbreak of fire was discovered in Mr J. Rivett's supper-rooms at about 12.30 ajn. yesterday morning, by Mr Tom Marsh, the nightwatchman, who at once ran to ring the fire bell, which, however, failed to ring. He then heard the screams of women in the vicinity of (he (ire, and, after having aroused several residents and members of the fire, brigade, rushed to the scene of the outbreak, where he found those who had occupied the premises during the night had reached safety, having escaped just in the nick of time, out on to the roof find down the verandah posts. Air Rivett was severely burnt about the feet, and is now laid up. The fire had evidently started in the vicinity of the cooking-stove, and all was well at 11.30 p.m. The prompt action of the fire brigade prevented what might have been a disastrous conflagration. At it is, at present Mr Rivett is the only loser, his premises being completely gutted. Before being detected, the fire had a good hold, and made up the chimney, thus cutting off the exit for Mr and Mrs Rivett and iliss (!. Welliam, who was sleeping on the premises. Fortunately, Mr and Mrs Rivett made good their escape on to an adjoining outbuilding, but Miss Welham had to jump from her window. iAII three received slight burns about the face and arms, and Mr Rivett had his feet badly cut about. After the first two or three (longs the bell jambel, and the watchman hurried round and roused one or two firemen, who were soon on the spot and had the hose going. Luckily, the fire was confined to the one establishment, but the adjoining premises of Messrs (irant and Co. did not escape damage altogether, for water made its way through. The premises were insured for .L 350 with the New Zealand Insurance Company, and the stock and fittings for £4OO, with the State office.

v Mr H. A. Heslop, of the Bank of New South Wales, lias received notice of his transfer to Ohaeawai, Bay of Islands, and leaves on Friday next to take up his duties there. Mr L. J. Loftus, of the Kelson branch, succeeds Mr Heslop. Mr and Mrs Harold Thomson are at present paying a short visit to Auckland.
