The chairman reported with reference to the Eiham road loan, that he believed the Btham Council waa quite willing to take it over, but as the Taranaki Council had collected the rates this year, it would only foe fair to pay thc interest, £46 3s 7d, and after that the Taranaki Council would be free of the liability.
It was decided that the interest be paid and that the Council approve of the transfer of tho loan to the Egmonfc County. The chairman farther reported that Mr Lacey had accepted the fl offered by the Council aa compensation for dama-me done in eartinp sitone over his property; also that in con junction with Councillor McAUum a site for the crushen- at the Frankleyi road pit had been fixed. METAL REQIRHMENTS.
A statement of meiai required by the various foremen for work during tiho coming year was laid on the table together with the chairman's recommendations thereon. The chairman stated that he had carefully gone through the figuresl, and in view of the state of the finances had in most eases reduced the amounts proposed by the foremen, as shown below:
Moa Riding.—'Metal required: 3150 yds. cost £1270 10s; deducted: 400 yds, cost, £140; chairman's recommendation, 3050 yards, cost £1607 10s j foremen's wages. £423; total, £1490 10».
The recommendation of the chairman waa adopted. Mangorei Riding.— Metal required: 3370 yds, cost £350 8s; deducted: OGOvds. cost, £384; chairman's recommendation: 2146 yards; cost, £906 Ss; foremen's wai?es, £423; total, £1359 Bs>.
Or. Morton stated that he had ascertained that Mr Mageej who had a contract on the Kent roatl had made an otlcr to cart out 400 yds. of boulders at 4s Od iper yard, he having found a good supply in the river, but it needed blasting and carting. He considered th was a fairly good offer as alone* was scarce there.
The chairman agreed with the suggestion', and after some discussion it was decided that the chairman be authorise'! 'n arrange with IMr for delivering extra metal on the Korito and Kent roads. The chairman's recommendation ro metal for this riding wa« adopted. Waitara Riding.—Amount ru|-u.ircu: 5877 yardß, cost £1958 IBs. Sd; deducted. 977 yairda, cost £325 13s 4d; chairman's recommendation 49O0vds, cost £1033 'os 8d; wages £504; total £2107 Gs Sd. The recommendation was adopted. Omata Tiding.— Amount required: 1500 yd», cost £652; deduction, 250 yards, cost' £lOl ss; chairman's recommendations, 1250 vards, cost £350 15s; wages £•282; total"£B32 15s.
Okato riding.—Metal required. 3103 yards, cost £IOO9 9s; add last year, 150 viards; cofit, £4B 15s; forclmcn's wages £423; total £1431 4s. ,The full requirements for this riding were granted. The chairman, referring to the cost of crushing in this riding, which some of the settlers had stated had amounted to 3s per yard, said that he. had gone through tho figures for last vear and found 1 that the cost of rolling, scarifying and crushing, including the foreman's wages amounted to only Is D'/.d ,per vaTd. ft'was to. authorise foreman nolmcs, junr., and Eva to get out gravel ■ bv day work, it being considered that there would be an appreciable sieving by adoptinir that course. FOREMENV3 REPORTS. The following report B were read and considered:—
Moa riding.—(Foreman K Bennett): Somje trees at the junction, of the I/udley and Junction roads on Mr Suter's propwt" require dealing with, as they obscure traffic, and it is a bad corner.
It was decided that Mr Suters be re- ' quested to cut down the trees. Mangorei Riding.—Foreman Katlen reported:—My roads are standing fairly well. It was Tesolved that no pipes bo granted for new culverts, but that pipes be authorised to lengthen the two culverts mentioned. Foreman Hancock reported:— Roads in good order. I have, repaired the .. r:ngton-Lepper aro«?.. road. Mr Baker gave three days' free labor. Mr .1. llal« should be notified to remove rubbish from waiter table. Complaints are made ahout wandering stock on the roads, and something should be done to prevent a continuance of the nuisance. Foreman Spencer reported.:—'During the month 1 have carted out GOO yards of boulders to the crusher site at Baker road and have started hauling out at the. bus corner. J. H. Magee is about to Blart his Mangorei road contract and offers to crush 200 yds. extra between creamery and Oliver's- for 1* per yard. The offer is reasonable, and 1 would lik.i the small roller when J. Magee is rcadv to start. Four sets of 9im. pipe's are required on the Onrrington road to replace wtone crossing-! removed. Twenty pipct} required in. all. Cr. Morton'n action in authorising timher for repairing bridge was confirmed.

Omata Riding.— Foremen 6eaimark and Eva reported the roads in fair order.
Okato riding.—Foreman Brosnan reported:—fiave been employed spreading metal. I have received 703 yards, from Timaru. Petone Hill, L'Jeey's and down to Timaru br ; ' e has been re-meit-alled and looks very well just now. I employed a horse and cart blinding for the roller thus allowing the water cart to devote its whole timo in watering the road. Note—Under specifications, the contractor (must oart out the screenings. Foreman Sefton reported:— My length in good order. Cowling has delivered CM yards which has been placed on the roads and rolled in. Seventy yawls were placed on the Weld road. Foreman (Meredith reported:—Roads veny fair with exception of ton end of Biurry hill road .Tough, also the P''"lrouth road between Mr Knittz's and Tanuae hill. Both require..ploughing up and reforming a H soon as" weather settles; Mr Green ploughed about eight chains on upper Plymouth road free of cost and I have formed same. Grev and Meredith have started their contract on upper Plymouth road. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Green for hist free labor on the upper Plymouth road. CORRESPONDENCE.
The director of technical education wrote applying for a renewal of the Council's grant to the Technical College. It was decided to vote £2O to the College. Mr. H. Dempsey wrote reminding the Council of his application to have the O'.d Hospital road repaired, particularly as to scarifying the upper part towards Cassell Hill, rcmctalling a section nearer town, and making the continuation from Cassell Hill to the comer fit for summer traffic. Mr Dempsey is to be informed that the chairman and Cr. Morton will he inspecting the road during this month. The bridge carpenter, Mr H. George, reported that the Timaru bridge on the beach was unsafe for cart traffic. Mr W. L. Carey, Egmont Village, wrote asking that the Maude road work should be put in hand as soon as possible.
It was decided to empower Cr. Morton to instruct the foreman on the matter. The Under-Secretary for Internal Affairs wrote notifying that the merging order of part of the Moa Road district had been gazetted.—Received. The Town Clerk of New Plymouth wrote stating that permission had been granted for crushing metal on the Tarahua road on certain conditions as to putting the road in good repair and indemnifying tho Borough Council from all claims connected with the work.— Received.
[ The Waitara Borough Council wrote relative to tho alteration of borough boundaries and adjustment of account*. Although the three months for the adjustment of accounts had expired, the Department advised that the bodies interested could proceed with the business, if the Taranaki Council were willing.— To be arranged. The district engineer of railways wrote suggesting that the Council should arrange with the Waitara West Road Board relative to the use of the Sentry Hill ballast pit.—Received. GENERAL.
Mr. J. H. Magee wrote asking if the Council would allow him to use a traction engine in place of a portable engine without any extra license fee till next April, up to which time the fee for the portable engine was paid. —Considerable discussion took placo over the matter, it being eventually decided to leave it with the chairman to deal with, together with Mr. Magee's proposal as to crushing. Mr. A. Cleaver waited on the Council to ask permission to put a fence across the continuation of the Smart road on the river side and to use the road.—The matter was left in the hands of the chairman to deal with.
Mr. It. E. Fairfax-Cholmeloy wrote calling attention to the state of the culvert across the Ilenwood Toad near the railway crossing.—The chairman undertook to inspect the culvert. A petition was read from five ratepayers of Hillsborough, Bell Block and Egmont road praying for the removal of fencos and gates across the Tahana road, the same being an obstruction. —After some discussion, it was decided to accede to the request. The District Engineer of Railways wrote stating that notning had yet been done relative to removal of trees by Mr. Griffiths at the Tfenwootl level crossing.—lt was decided to forward a copy | of the letter to Mr. Griffiths.
iA formal resolution was passed authorising the seal to be affixed to an assignment of a lease of section 24, Tarurutangi, from ¥. Copestake to J- F. Copcstake. A statutory resolution was passed confirming the special order merging the Tataraimaka road district into the county. Cr. Billing enquired if any reply had been received from the Government relative to a subsidy on the £6OO Plymouth road loan.—The clerk replied that no definite answer had been given.—-It was decided that the clerk write and press for a reply. Cr. McAllum stated that Mr. J. Tarry had offered the Council, a set of a new type of pipes for crossings, capable of carrying the heaviest traffic. —The offi>r was accepted with thanks, and a trial is to be made of the pipes. Accounts amounting to £1136 10s 7d were passed for payment.
SPECIAL MEETING. A MERGING ORDER. On the question of passing the special order for dissolving the Werekino road district and morgini it into the county, a letter was received from the clerk of the Werckino Road Board, asking that the merging proposals be deferred till the end of the financial vear, to enable the Board to carry out the works in hand and adjust road accounts. Cr. Morton did not c ee hpw the passing of the special order could be delayed without commencing the proceedings de novo. Tt was decided that the passing of the order should be proceeded with, and on the motion of the chairman the foTmal order was passed,
