One of tho first administrative acts of tho new Commonwealth Government was -to re-appoint Mr Justice Higgins as president of the Commonwealth Arbitration Court for a further term of seve* years. He is at present on a holiday in Europe. The death occurred at Wellington on Thursday night, at his residence, Murphy Street, of Mr John Newton, proprietor of tho soap works at Kaiwarra. Mr Newton, who was 77 years of age, was a native of Glasgow, wheTo he had long engaged in th,e soap trade. He arrived in Wellington'in 1885, with a complete plant, and established the business at Kaiwarra, quickly gaining a wido *onsection throughout New Zealand. Mr Thomaß Osborne, ono of the oldest residents of the Wairarapa district, has just died, at the great age of 9(1 years. He landed in Auckland from the barque Kanuba in 1857. Eight years afterwards ■he removed to Wellington, and in ISU he went to Upper Plain, Masterton. Three years late he removed to Olareville, where he has resided ever since.

Mr and Mrs Thomas Voale, celebrated their golden wedding this week at their home, To Henui, whea there was a large family gathering. A very pleasant and enjoyable evening was spent, some of the brothers and sisters being present from Patea, Waitara, and New Plymouth. A sheaf of congratulations was received by letters and telegrams, some coming from Thames, Tc Aroba, Auckland, Tarata, Alton, Patea, Wanpanui, Marton, Wellington and New Plymouth. Tho presents received were both numerous and handsome. 'the party broke up at 12.30 with the singing of the National Anthem. It is just over seventy-three years since Wr Vealc arrived in New Plymouth by the Amelia Thompson on September 3, 1841.
