ESCAPE OF THE KARLSRUHE.

FOUNT) COALING FUOM KROXPItKZ WLLIIKLM.

New York, August 11

The British cruiser Sufi'ollc, llagsiiip of Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock, on arriving at Halifax yesterday for coal, brought another version of the engagement last Friday between the British cruiser Berwick and the German cruiser Karlsruhe. Ollieers of the Suffolk say that shots were exchanged as tiie two fighting .ships raced through the. sea. No damage was done to the Berwick, and it is admitted that the Karlsruhe when last seen was going at a rate which indicated that she had not been injured. Early on Friday morning the Suiroik came upon the Karlsruhe just as she was beginning to take coal from the Kronprinz Wilhelm, the North German Lloyd liner, which slipped out of New York Harbor on the night of August 3. When the iSttfi'olk was sighted by the German liner, the latter separated from the cruiser, left some, of her boats behind, and dashed away to safety. The Karlsruhe was also quick, to get away. The .Suffolk took up the ediase, and from 11 o'clock iu the morning until five in the evening the two cruisers raced across the open sea, the German gradually pulling away until finally those aboard the Suffolk could see only the smoke from her funnels as she fell heiow the horizon. Meanwhile the wireless aboard the Suffolk was sending a message to the distant Berwick, and she, coming in the opposite direction, headed off the Karlsruhe, and forced her to change her course. The Berwick worked in toward her, and several shots were exchanged, 'but there was no hit, and the Karlsruhe widened tho distance between the two until the Berwick turned about and gave up the chase—New York livening l'ost.
