Rheims Tragedy
rOPE PROTESTS TO THE KAISER, j "PROVOKING THE MYIXE IRE," Received 23, S p.m. Amsterdam. September 24. An official Berlin statement admits using one mortar shot against the Rheims Cathedral, because the field artillery was ineffective to dislodge the observation post. Rome, September 24. The newspapers state that the Pope telegraphed to the Kaiser deploring the damage to the Rheims Cathedral, saying: "When you destroy the temples of God, you provoke the Divine ire, before which even potent armies lose all power."
