On the Sea
AUSTRIAN VESSELS SUNK. AS A RESULT OF STRIKING MINES. Received 26, 1.30 a.m. Milan, September 24. Advices from Trieste state that two torpedoors of the Austrian liigU sea J>et and an Austrian destroyer struck mines ncai' Bahnatia, and sank. The fate of the crews is unknown. THE AUSTRALIAN LOSS. CREDITED TO GERMAN FLEET. Rotterdam, September 24. The Morgen Post (Berlin) remarks on the loss of the Australian submarine, and says that evidently the German fleet in the Pacific is not idle. EMDEN KEEPS BUS*. THE CITY OF .MADRAS SHELLED. Calcutta, September 24. Router states that the Emden shelled Madras, but no serious damage was done. A NIGHT ATTACK.
Received 25, 8 p.m. Calcutta, September 24. Official.—The Emden arrived off Madras on the night of the 23rd and fired nine shots. The first hit the Burma Oil Company's tanks, igniting them. Two otlher huildings were struck, but were undamaged. Three Indians were killed. When our guns replied the Emden ceased firing, extinguished her lights, and departed. The affair lasted 15 minutes.
