NOTES QN THE RACING. (Special to "Daily News.") By "Moturoa." Wanganui, Last Night. The Wanganui J.C. Spring Meeting opened under favorable circumstances. The weather wag fine, with the exception of one light shower before the Spring Handicap. The courso was fast, and the times fast. Winners were not easy to pick, well-backed-oncs like MumBier, Rewi l'oto, First Flight, Aruake, and King Chira meoting with defeat. Taranaki horses were much in evidence, but Grattan was the only ono to win, though several others were knocking at the door.
All started in the Flying Handicap, Mummer and Sir Moseloy being best backed. A straggling start saw Grattan shoot wut, and te won from end to end A dozen contested the Maide* Hack race, lllackall, llerehau, and Improve carrying the bulk of the money. Another bad start saw Fidessa and Montelvii first away, Ngapoto being badly left. Blaekall got to the front at the home but had to be ridden out to keep tlear of Rerehau. All started in the Wanganui Guineas, and a fine race resulted. Hycttug carried a trifle more money than tne bracketed pair, First Wight and Don Franeisco. Balboa was turned the wrong way when the tapes lifted. l'uriform and Mia Cara were temporarily in the load, but Ilyottus led along the back from Mia Cara and First Flight. Reputation camo fast in the straight, and with First Flight challenged and passed Hyettus. A fino raeo resulted in Reputation tomiiig away from his southern rival orer the last 00 yards, and winning nioely. There was little between Glenoreliy and Aruake when the betting on the Okeliu Hurdles elosed. Timothy led to the second fence, and fell. Mamtau was then indulged with the lead, but Glenorehy ranged alongside at the last hurdle, and eventually won easily. Bereola finished fast •lose up third, but Aruake was too »ore to do himself jusWee.
Clcn Nevis was a very hot order in the Gonville ilaek Hurdles, hut failed to run up to expectations. Kew and St. Gate wer» responsible for most of the pace, and the former had too inuoh pace for th« St. Clements gelding ia the run home. Ilarbor Light ran wretchedly, and was well ia the rear all the way. A field of 17 iported silk i» the Putiki Hack Handicap. King Chira waa heavily backed, and Flagfall and Reno alo cam® ia for spirited eupporfc. Tyson jumped out first from a poor start, and led to the distance. Rene and Ardent thes came through, the farmer winning easily. King Chira got well away, but eould liavi- been better handled, Ollirer leaving his run to» late. Kewi Poto and Mummer carried the bulk of the investments in the Spring Handicap. From an excellent start Royal Dragoon led for five furlongs from
feewi Pote. The latter then took the lead, and wag still in front at the iotne turn, where Awahou challenged him, aiid a great race home saw tlie Taranaki horso beaten by a bare Head. Maniarou was chopped out just after the Btart. All went to the post for the Durie Hack Handicap, Montana and Want being considered the best. Gay Guard and Austin led past the stand, bat along the back Sir Donald displaced Gay Suard and led into the straight. Austin drew up at the distance, and won comfortably. SECOND DAY'S WEIGHTS.
