J OPCXAKE. I (From our own Correspondent). | Hie annua! meeting of the Bowling i Club was held in the Club Hotel on Monj day evening. There was a large attenj dunce. Dudley was elected president, Messrs Burton and Cornish vieeI presidents; Mr Hammond secretary. | A mass meeting of ratepayers in the Opimake harbor rating area was held in the Ounake Town Hall on Wednesday afternoon. ATr l'\ P. Hughes, chairman of the Board, presided and explained that the meeting was called for the purpose of discussing the improvements of the harbor proposals prior to taking a poll on the proposal for a loan of .150,000. The ehairman, Messrs Moore and llurst (members of the Board) spoke in favor of the proposal, and quoted figures to show that farmers would save a sum equal to a new suit of clothes per year in the area by obtaining their goods regularly by boat, as against cartage freight. The meeting was unanimously in favour of the loan proposals, and a resolution was carried that this meeting pledges itself to carry the loan proposals at the poll. A number of Opunake bowlers visited the Piliama bowling green on Wednesday, the occasion being the opening of the bowling season. Piliama is famous for tho afternoon teas given by tho lajlies, and the afternoon on the green were is always an enjoyable occasion n>r visitors.
PUNino. (From Our Own Correspondent). Our social ami dunce in aid of the Patriotic Fund came off on Friday night last, and was a huge success. Everything was given free. The school was decorated with flags, etc., and looked very nice. It was a fine night, and we had a very large attendance, and, best of all, everyone was very liberal. Some of the prizes won were put up'for auction again and again, bringing in a substantial amount for the fund. Messrs Knight, Tlarrett, Eowe and Corbett piayoil the dance music. Altogether, wo llad a very enjoyable evening. The proceeds from the social realised £lB 4s, /Vmation from Mr, Jos. MeEldowney, senr., £•>, I'uniho school children collection £1 lis, making a grand total »f £2l His.
