DISTRICT NEWS.
JJAIiKTAWA. (From our Own Correspondent.) The extraordinary spell of fine weather is being taken full advantage ot by the settlers generally. A considerable amount of ploughing for oats has already been done while stumping operations are in a very advanced stage. The recent alterations eil'eeted to the Durham school grounds, whereby the children have been enabled to p'ant llower beds, is evidently appreciated by the youngsters, who have quite a variety of bloom* already showing. I understand the children are very much interested, in thtt work. Tho icpoit of the annua examination is very satisfactory and, the teacher (Miss S. Meyer) is to be congratulated on the very eMcie.u manner' in which the school is conducted. In response to a circular to school children to collect funds to defray the upkeep of an ambulance waggon for the New Zealand troops, the Durham children have totted up the sum of ill, and considering tho "sub." was to be. coi.lincd to children only, and a small sum at that, the nipper.-, have, undoubtedly done very well. The supply of milk to the creamery and factory' is slowly increasing, but the dry weather is against good yields—a good solid downpour for a few hours would be "just the thing." Tiie war is tlie sole topic day and night, no matter where one goes and the News is eagerly awaited in almost every household in the district. Tlie Durham committee held its usual monthly committee on Monday night last, ail hut one being present. Keply was received from the ISoard re the matter of desks, which was left in the Inspector's hands. The chairman stated •that Ore, hack catted a certain mimiher 01 drain pipes and the matter 01 engaging a plumber was left in hU hands. The Inspector's report on the examination was duly considered, and the advance in point's awarded Die. committee lor work to grounds, etc., caused great satisfaction." Several other matters ot minor importance was attended to. Jhe school will he closed for a fortnight from ijth September to enable the t"aeher to attend the Koyd Carliek course of physical drill,at New i'ly-
