The German destruction of Termonde was as ruthless as that of l.ouvain. Over a hundred buildings were destroyed by artillery or burned, including the. Town Hall, Museum, and Palace of Justice. Only on one occasion did they behave in a civilised manner. When the lioxpital was blazing they carried out the patients and placed them in safety. The soldiers pillaged the wine cellars and rushed about in a drunken frenzy, killing women, children and old men. They robbed those whom they spared. SAYING A BURGOMASTER. Ghent, September 9. A report says that the Burgomaster has been appointed secretary to the United States League to prevent him being molested by the Germans, who wished to hold him as a hostage.
