Mr Cherry, who -was commissioned by the Commonwealth to investigate the operations of the Beef Trust in Ata'rica, reports as the result of his investigations in England and America that certain large packing firms, particularly 'Armour, Swift and Morris,, were the •greatest factors in the American meat -trade. They worked together to give • uniform "prices for certain qualities of live stock. The producer "eneraMy ob■taiiirf lair prices, hut the consumer is exploited to a curtain extent. A progressive competitor of the beef trust is apt to he ousted from the business unless he concedes a share to th>3 miombers of the trust. There is no law in the United Slates to prevent under-selling, lie arrived at the conclusion that Australia had much to fear from the incursions of the meat firms of the 'American Beef Trust. In the interests of the community he maintains that, the T'ommonwealth requires healthy competition and many good works with capitals of at least £50,000 ami moderate 'plant commensurate with the output.
