SIPv OLIVER LODGE'S VIEWS.
: Sydney, September 5. Sir Oliver Lodge, in an interview, declared that the. war was an abominable piece of wickedness, but, when there wa s a. bullying dominant Power amongst the nations, for the sake of humanity, it was necessary- to smash it with such vigor that it could not rear .its head again. He hoped the attitude of British fairness and humanitarian scruples would be pursued to the uttermost whatever her foes might do.
THE lUSE IX PRICES.
Sydney, September 5. . Evidence was given before the Necessary Commodities Commission that the price of some goods was temporarily raised owing to delay in obtaining the ■shipments anticipated. This wi'l shortly be relieved. Owing to the great advance in wheat it is expected that wheat meals will go higher.
A POLL-TAX SUGGESTED.
Perth, September 5. , At' a meeting- of citizens to consider .means of averting distress arising out of the war, the. Mayor proposed a polltax of £2 on bachelors, £1 on married and single men. and 10s on spinsters. The committee is considering the. suggestion.
