BELGIANS INVOKE AID 01-' Till; SEA,
TO SWAMP TIJIC GERMANS.
STIFF FIGHTING.
Received 7, 12.00 a.m. Antwerp, September 7.
About 43.1)00 Germans in AloM and the surrounding villages continued a movement north and north-west of Brussels for the purpose of cutting Antwerp's communications with OsLend and the coast towns. The Germans burnt villages on their way.
There was stern lighting between Hal inos and Termonde, the Belgians shot/
ing great elan.
When the Germans occupied Termonde the Belgians cut the dykes, Hooding the district and completely surprising the (Hermans, who did not expect such a sacrifice. The Germans, when the telegram was sent, were waist-deep ;n water, working heroically to pull out ftp. guns, under heavy fire from the outermost Antwerp forts, the Germans losing heavily. (Termonde, or Dendermonde, js n fortified town, about 17 miles east of Ghent, and about 20 miles north-west of Brussels.) ANTWERP OVERCROWDED. PART OF THE (HERMAN .PLANS. Received fi, 5.5 p.m. Ostend, September 5. The German Governor at Brussels is forcing civil guards, though disarmed, to assist in defence works. This is a fresh violation of international law.
A German aernplnno bombarded Ghent, also Eeloo. No was was hurt, out some damage was caused to -property. Another was forced to descend At Ostend, and was captured. Belgian engineers have flooded several 'districts, especially about Maliw's. General Dufour, in order to prevent scarcity of food, is freeing Antwerp of war refugees. 'They actually exceed the ciiys' normal population.
Judications are that the German vandalism in other cities is with the deliberate intention to drive tbe inhabitants into Antwerp, hoping that later, in tbe event of a siege, the city would speedily capitulate from famine. Meanwhile they sought to demoralise the population by means of aircraft and bombs.
