EMPIRE PICTURES.

This evening at the. Empire? Theatre will witness tin- first screening in New Plymouth of a Vitagraph star feature drama in JKHMIft of motion photography, which is cited as the best of its kind yet produced in kinematography. Thy makers certainly seem to have attained something quite unusual in the way of realism in reproducing a railway collision between pasenger trains, at the time travelling at a great rate of speed. The smash and its consequences are said to lie most vividly shown. The present film is the first to present an actual collision. Two fully-equipped trains were purchased, and a special line of railway was built on land bought for the purpose. Tile entire cost of the remarkable elTect attained is stated at well over £IO,OOO. After the impact engines anil carriages were, of course, reduced to wreckage. The story is described as being brimful of interest, whibt the acting is paid to be much beyond the ordinary. Another subject of distinction and particular interest just now is "Mexican War IPictuTes." This film, made and completed at the front, only arrived by the last mail. It (rives a vivid idea of actual warfare. The supporting pictures include: "Mon(nna State Fair" (sporting and industrial), "Alegria's Acrobats" (famous vaudeville stars), "Courting Betty's Beau" (comedy), and the latest Pathe Gazette.
