Russian Advance in Germany
RUSSIAN REVERSE ADMITTED. GERMANS SUDDENLY REINFORCED. RUSSIANS TEMPORARILY REPULSED, CZAR'S ARMIES STILL ATTACKING. Paris, September 2. Reuter's correspondent at Pctrograd reports that Russian reinforcements arrived immediately after their reverse at a place not stated. Received 3, 8.35 p.m. London, September 2 (morning). Delayed (Pctrograd comments in Russian newspapers suggest that they sustained a reverse in East Prussia, but there are no details. New York, September 3. Messages from German wireless assert that a force of Russians was captured during their attack across the swamps and lakes of the Ortelsburg district. Received 3, 9.40 p.m. Pctrograd, September 2. The Chief of Staff states that the reverse in East Prussia was purely local, due to the sudden arrival of German reinforcements with siege gnns, and that the Russian offensive in the southern area of East Prussia continues. GERMAN BIG GUNS TURN THE SCALE. ( REVERSE HAS BRACING EFFECT. Received 4, 1.20 a.m. Pctrograd, Sept. 3 (morning). Experts ascribe the reverse near Os- i tercol to the superiority of guns from I G'randeuz, including the latest Krupps. The Russians fought with unflinching courage, despite terrible odds. Two Generals were killed by a chance shell, fired from a great distance.
The frankness of the General Staff in publishing the news immediately had a tracing effect, and so far from the disaster weakening the attack in/East Prussia, the forces, united under General Rennekampf, continue # to drive the Germans from their positions,
The Russians destroyed several railWays in the Koenigsherg district. ■ The Germans have no field hospitals, but merely a large number of doctors who do their dressing- and perform operations in any available building. They have no tents. The wounded lie in villages along 1 the line of march until-an, empty motor-car, omnibus, or supply wagon chances to return to the ba.-ie.
