UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE.

AX APPEAL, lA meeting' of the local unemployment committee was held last night, His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. E. Wilson) presiding. Among those present was Mr. Arnold, Inspector of Factories, who is in constant touch with those out of employment. From information before the committee it was evident that there were a number of men out of work at present, a large proportion of whom were married, the number of dependents being set down as fifty. It was decided to advertise, in the local papers, calling the attention of farmers, contractors, and others to the existence, of available labor of all sorts in Xew Plymouth, and the desirability of finding employment for the men, as'(.«■,Laily those who are uuiiTie.il, and have children depenitent on them. The committee .expressed the hope that the country settlers and townspeople would do all in their power to find work for the unemployed, i\ven if it is only for a day or two. They pointed out that if the men were given a day's work each by six people it would mean a week's pay for the irieo. They are confident that satisfactory terms can be arranged, and Mr. Arnold will do all in .his power to make the necessary arrangements if employees will only communicate with him at his office in Silver street, where he 'has a register of unemployed. There, must be many residents who at this time of the. year would lie glad of having digging and tidying-aijp done in their grounds, anil. i this can be accomplished at a reasouablo outlay at 'present, two good results would accrue.
