Another Battle in Progress.
BRITISH HOLD THE CENTRE.
• BIG GERMAN FORCES. FURTHER FRENCH RETIREMENT. GERMAN REGIMENT WIPED OCT,
Paris, August 31.
A severe action is progressing to the southwards of Mezieres, on the line from Launois to Signylabbaye.
There are indications that General Sir John French is on or south of the line Guise to Signylabbaye. The Germans are thus facing a salient, of which the British force w the top line, and the French forces constitute the two wings.
It is officially stated in Taris Ciit a German force is attacking from the west, its front extending from Guise to Lafaron, which is to the northward of La on. Official.—Midnight. A German infantry regiment essaying to cross the Meuse at Sassayo was practically wiped out. The progress of the German wing forced the French left to give ground.
(A "salient," in military parlance, is a projecting angle. Thus the British troops are apparently at the apex of a triangle, nearest to the enemy's line of approach.)
