At the Theatre Royal last night "'Hie Smart Set," who iretura under the direction of iter. Edward Branecombe, commenced a, ,two nights' season, and though the building was no* filled the;* was a large and, appreciative audience. Thero are some mew faces in <&<s 'SSet," but they all possess talent for this class of entertainment, and their vocal qualifications are of a high order, and the programme was one that enabled the various members of tlhe "Set" to show to advantage, and tihat lihey did a> goes without saying. Among the favorites who received' a warm welcome were Mr. Walter George, a prepossess. ing, robust comedian, who sings a, good song, and is always interesting in his comedy work. Mies Georgie Martin, the lively comedienne, m ateo tack again,, as vdmful as ever. She showed a vein of originatoty in her ttJreaAment of iher items. With Mr. George, she executed still another variety "Of "the interminable tango, as an intiroduotfom to ft clever and amusing skit on ,thc "tango tea," mow the vogue in all the . large centres. Another favorite in the vocal line, who was heartily welcomed, was Mr. Ernest Varices (formerly of Wellington) whose rich and powerful baritone was heard ito distinct advantage. The "Set",possesses another culS? ainger ini Mr - Jones, a light baritone of extensive mange whose voice has a pleasing ring and 'is used with judgment. The comedian of the company is Mir. Harry do Bobeek, who m an unostentatious manner, gets in some cheerful hum/or of an effective order, and •was a bright spot in the numerous «naemible items. Mass Gwcnyth Evans sings pleasantly in a mooest but melodious mezzo. Another valuable member of the company is 'Miss Lalia JinigMt, who has a bright, secure and powerful soprano voice tfbat is up to taie pitch. She showed an easy facility in florid vocalisation. Mr. Gavin 'Wiood has deserted serious Bong to take up the role of a lugubrious comediiam and as such found favor in this items! MX. Edgar Hulland! accompanies delight- • f y 'J? d F x>ved hiß capacity as a soloist. The finale, All Go and Listen to the Band," besides 'being highly eonuc, exihibited Mr. George as a capital character comedian.
