A London cablegram announces the death of Lord Merthyr, aged .77 years.

News has been received of the death of Mr. Alexander John liad field, an old New Zealand settler, who passed away at his residence at St. John's lliil, Wanganui, on Monday. The deceased was the second son; of the late Captain Henry Wilbraham Hadfipld, of the Indian Army. He was boi'n at HighclilY, Ventnor, on the Isle of Wight, in 1842, and arrived in the Dominion in. the sailing ship Wild Duck in 18G2, after a voyage of over three months. The deceased was for many years engaged in slice]) farming in the Ilawke's Bay and Otaki districts, lie made many trips to England, and was there married to the daughter of the late Colonel Charles Hadfichl, of Litchfield, Derbyshire, but Si is wife did not survive the stormy voyage out to New Zealand. He married the seeofid time, the second daughter of the late Francis Robinson, of llerrington, Foxton. The deceased leaves a widow and a grown-up family of five sons and four daughters.
