A Sydney cablegram reports the death of Mr Henry Alexander, who founded Druidism in the North Island'. A Sydney message states that Mr XJntlaitt, American consul at Auckland, 13 passenger by the Rivenna, which is due in Auckland on Sunday. The Hon. W. H. Herriee, who has been in indifferent health for some days post has been removed to a private hospitaifor treatment.—Press Association. Mr T. E. Corkill, second son of Mr T. B. Corkill, of the Bank of New land, and who is a fourth year medical student at Edinburgh Univeisvty, has been offered and accepted a commission in tihe Royal Army Medical Coops. The Right Rev, O. T. L. Crowley, who last, year resigned the bishopric of Auckland owing to ilMiealth, has been appointed by the Bishop of J.landaff to | the .rectory of St, Andrew Major, with Dmas Powis, near Cardiff. The rectory ts of the gross value of £5lB **>■ annum, net £420, with house. Mr. William McLean, who died in Wellington on Mojiday, was a native of Scotland, and was sixty-nino viars of age. In 1863 he arrived at "Duncdin from Home in the ship Dauntless. Mr. McLean was a schoolmaster in his young days, and had considerable experience on the Otago goldfields. He was engaged in business in Reefton for a period, and while on the West Coast married Miss Crumpton, who predeceased him by nine years. Thirty-four years ago he Started as an auctioneer in Wellington, and when the rush to Terawhiti occurred he, then a sharebroker, took a leading part in the development of the field, Mr. McLean originated the movement for a Wellington Opera jHouse, and was secretary of the Opera House Companv for many years. A great believer in Taranaki oil, he was managing director of tine Bonithon Company, and selected the plant used by that firm while on a •i special trip to America for the purpose. Deceased was a Freemason, a member of the Excelsior Lodge of Druids, and the energetic president of the Wellington Association of Spiritualists. In January, 1592, Mr. McLean was elected I a member for Wellington of the House of Representatives, defeating the Hon. j.(tihen Mr.) H. D. Bell ,by 135 votes. Deceased leaves two sons, Messrs Sidney and Ronald MeLean (both of Wellington) and three daughters, Mesdames Whittem (Vancouver), W, J. Perkins ) and William Wright, of Wellington.
