A GOOD SUGGESTION.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —I believe the suggestion has been made in various quarters that, in view of the intense distress that will undoubtedly be experienced in England owing to the present war, gifts of left-off olothing sent there would be much appreciated. That there will be a certain amount of distress and destitution here also cannot be doubted, but I think that local benevolence ma,y safely be trusted to deal with such cases as they arise, while only those who have ever lived in England can fully understand or appreciate the conditions of abject poverty in which many of our fetfow-creatures always live, and which 'the present trouble will enormously accentuate. Here the winter !b practically over; at Home it will soon be beginning. 'Many people will be discarding soon the heavy clothing which they or their children have worn lately, and those articles, the move or less shabby or worn, would be a Godsend to many a poor woman or child at Home, shivering in a November northeast wind. This is a matter for the ladies rather than men, and if any number of them approve of the suggestion and will communicate their views to you, or to mi; through you, I will at least undertake to provide a central depot where contributions liould be sent, and will arrange for their packing, shipping, and so on. 1 have little uoubt that the shipping companies would convoy any cases free of charge, and if consigned to the headquarters of the Church Army or the Salvation Army, we could rest assured the contents would be properly distributed. This, however, is a matter of detail oil which those who give should express their opinion. As Ido not wish to advertise myself, I for the moment do not sign my name, but if the sug- 1 gestion meets with anything like general approval, X shall be more than willing to give any help I can in the direction I have indicated above. —T am, A MERE MAN.
