DISTRICT NEWS.
J TARIKI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) An entluisiasie patriotic meeting was lleld in ithe Hall on the 15th iiwt., and a iputriotit- fund was started, £32 being subscribed in the room. A strong committee was elected, with an executive consisting of M'eesrs W. W. Stephenson (chairman), 10. Oossman (toon. sec. and treas.), A. K. Lawrence, H. Eason, F. Ri.ey, J. Therkleson, and T. Therkleson. Mr Young, Mayor of Inglewoad, was present, and, at .thxs request of the chairman, addressed the mooting. He expressed his pleasure at thie enthusiasm displayed, and assured the Tariki peopb of Inglewood's hearty co-operation, j Mr W. Matthews was heartily applauded for (his spirited rendering of a patriotic song,- and in the course of a j ehort tipeceh assured Tariki that tinslnglewood Patriotic Committee would bo glad to assifet in any entertainments that were got up. (Applause.) Cheers for the Expeditionary Force and a hearty rendering of the National An,'hem concluded the meeting. Mr dimming, hon. sec. of the Inglewood Committee, "was afco present, and Mass Gumming, presided at the piam. A meeting' of ladies was .held in the | Hall on the 17th inst.. when there, were {24 present. Mrs H. Eason wa» elected president, Miss L. Long treasurer, ana Mrs Stephenson 3#>n. necretary. Subscriptions were Made for niaturia's, and a weekly subscription fixed. An allday forking bee was held on the 17th, when there was a large -attendance, i fine day's work being done, anil all the Materials purchased were made up. Dates laave been fixed for future working bees, and any ladies wishing to help should communicate with the president or hon. secretary. ' _A working bee was arranged for-the 17tti iiwt.. to dig and cart to th- station a fine crop of carrots donated by Mr John Hackett, In spite of the weather being wet and cold in the morning, ttere was a. fine muster of "bees," which increased as the day went on. Mr La-wrence, who was placed in command, lost no time in getting his -wil'iiig army of workers grafting hard, with the result that the entire crap, commuted at about 20 tons, wa rt dug, bagged and carted to the trucks, the work bcinj completed about 4.30 p.m. Messrs. Hildred, Butler and Kerr provided teams, and there were altso a number of carts and horses employed in conveying the rootrf to the station. Those who too\ part in "the bee" were. Messrs 11. Master 11. Smith drove a store cow donated by Mrs Long, to the saleyard at Stratford,'where it realised £3 15* a. welcome addition to the fund, which is now over £,W, and would have 'been considerably more had n be»n started earlier, as a number of our best local patriot* have already made their donations to luglewood and Stratford.
