The mooting of these two native teams had been eagerly looked forward to, and it wag predicted that a goon game would result (says the Wellington Times). .Saturday .was an ideal Rugoy day—line weather, no wind, and a dry ground. There was a large attendance, natives forming quite seventy-five per cent, of the total. Prior to the maten both teams, in uniforms, marched to the ground, preceded by the Tvamm,; Farm band, which played patriotic aits. A 'Halt was made before the ground w.i,i reached, and Mr. Rere Nicholson ad-' dressed both teams, calling upon them to play a clean and friendly game, ftorowhenua was rather heavier than the visitors, and their hookers, as a rule, secured the ball from the scrum. Tile home team started off at a grout pace, and had Taranaki defending. From ,t forward rush liuxton scored, but Nepia failed to convert. Later on, from a similar rush, llopa passed to Jacob, who got over, and this time Xepia added the major points. From the commencement of the second spell, Taranaki settled down to hard [day and had the upper hand, but scored only once, tlie try, being converted. Horowhenua during the last twenty minutes acted on the defensive, and, thanks almost entirely to tile splendid play of Tangipo, kept file visitors out. Twice they were witliin an ace of scoring, once when they just missed a drop at goal, and again from a free kick, when the ball dropped just under the bar. Horowhenua thus won by R points Lo 5. Mr T. Partita was referee.
