The, first 12, years are spent in the Ikst line, the Elite, the next eight in the Landwehr. anil the remaining eight in the Land-turn). There are also separate forces, raostlv Landwehr. for manning the fortifications which close the St. Gothard Pass and the. Rhone Valine to a possible invader fn ni the south. The infantry are. armed with the 'Swiss repeating rille. Th« Held artillery is armed with a quick-firing shielded Krupp 7.~> e.m. calibre. The "position" artillery has batteries of 5.4 and 12 cm. gllllS.
