On Tuesday, August 25, the Ktzroy Fire Brigade" will hold a eucure party and dance in aid of the Patriotic Fund. Mr. F. S. Johns, on behalf of tflic staff of the local branch of .1. H. Cock and Co., has presented Mr. H. L. Seldon, who is going with the expeditionary force, with a handsome wristlet watch. All employees of the New Zealand Clothing Factory accepted for service in the expeditionary force will be granted Half pay for six 'months and their positions will remain open for them on their return. At a conference on Saturday between Major Bellringer and Captain McDonnell and the president and committee of the Defence Rifle Club, it was decided to immediately proceed with the enrolment of a national reserve. Officers will 'be in attendance at the old Drill Hall to-night from 7.30 to 8.30. National reserves vill be organised in New Plymouth, Waitcra, Inglewood, Stratford, EWiam, Hawera and Patea, and the rifle clubs at Okato, Opunake, Manaia, Kaponga, AVliangamomona and other outlying centres will also enrol members, w!ho will niter upon a couise of military training. It is proposed to organise the whole of the rifle clubs throughout Taranaki on a regimental basin and appoint regimental officers. The New Plymouth Rifle Club is arranging a conference for this purpose, and it is probable that a big shooting mate* will be arranged for at Waiwakaiho. The riflo clubs and officers of the national reserve will work together in teaching the citizen army the proper use of the rifle. Members of the National Reserve willing to purchase rifles will have nn opportunity of being transfcrre'J to the rifle clubs. It is anticipated that training will commence on I Thursday evening next, hut due notice will be given.
