CHILDREN AND THE WAR.

\ I To the Editor. Sir,--The saddest feature of war is the wholesale Snaking of widows and orphans. and the gigantic struggle now convulsing Europe will tax the resources of institutions for children to breaking point. An appeal at the present time, on behalf of Dr. Barnado's Homes may he regarded by a few as inopportune; j the great majority, however, of New Zealanders will welcome ail opportunity of helping the little ones whose fathers, at the call of duty, gave their lives for tlie Empire. Patriotism has many aspects, ami it would he a reproach if ours ended with the bearing of a sham in the naval and military burdens, and refused to assist the orphaned children of our gallant sailors and soldiers. The claims for admission to Dr. Barnado's Homes will greatly increase in number and urgency. . The funds, on the other hand, are likely to show an alarming falling-oIT, unless til.' sacred duty of caring for the children be pressed home on every possible oi-easion. Dr. Barnardo's Homes arc a national work, firmly established in public confidence. They already shelter over 8000 boys and girls (more than 1000 of whom are crippled, sick or in some other way afflicted) and for food alone £230 is needed daily. Subscriptions and donations will be thankfully received by our hon. treasurer for New Zealand. Mr. P. Harper Cox., Bank of Australasia, Christchurch, by our local hon. secretary, Mrs. Dockrill, Eliot street. New Plymouth, or by myself, at the address given below, and receipts, if desired, will be sent from our London office for all sums of 2s fid and over. With grateful thanks for the use of vour columns. —T am, etc.. , IL W. r.EE, Organising Secretary for New Zealand. 9 Kity.roy Road, Napier.
