A HINT TO THE EMPIRE.

"Tim King and Queen have ordered plain and simple living as the daily rule at the Royal table." Sucfh are the words contained in one of yesterday's cable ipessages from London, and they deserve to be taken to heart and acted upon by every loyal subject throughout the Empire. It may not seem a great act for the King and Queen to he frugal and abstemious in place of the customary rule of high living, but it is Just one of those simple deeds of self-denial which should appeal with telling force to the British people. The motive which prompted such a decision is in itself worthy of the King and Queen, for they well know that there is nothing which the people love so much as following the lead of their Sovereign, In addition to this there is a peculiar appropriateness in making the style of living to accord with the stress of national circumstances. To save expense that money may be hoarded or misused is universally condemned, but to be selfdenying in order to be able to spare larger gifts for the needy, to relieve tlie distress of those afl'Jicted through war losses, shows a spirit of altruism that comes with welcome grace from such an exalted source. It may .be that before the war is ended there will be enormous calls made on the purses of the community as well as on those of the highest in the land, and to follow the example of the King and Queen in simple living is one practical way in which all loyal subjects of the Crown can show their patriotism and help forward the success of the cause which the Empire's forces are now upholding.
