The building of Australia's new man-o'-war, the Brisbane, was in progreis at the Federal shipbuilding works in Sydney during the recent visit to that city of Mr George Fraser, Mayor of Northcote. He took an opportunity of inspecting the work proceeding, and describes it as 'being quite equal to that of the Old Country. He also saw two tiaval vessels of a small type in process of building. Ail were being constructed from the raw material. In the matter of engine work Mr Fraser was also impressed with what he saw, and he was shown, too, some very fine examples of casting and of steel work. Mr Fraser is satisfied that Australia has the ability to construct its own naval vessels, but questions wbetbov the country will riot find the cost 'too great a strain. Ho states that the Federal Government is asking for £5,000.000 for its naval programme, and that, he consider.-!, is* a laige burden for a population <>f4^oo,000 to shoulder. He will in the light of prpscnt events, no doubt entiroiy change his view.
