DISTRICT NEWS.

lIARI3OR BOARD. The ordinary monthly meeting of the Opunake Ilaroor Board was held on Thursday. Present: Messrs Ilughson (chairman), Lambie, McKeown, llurst, Moore and Macfte.

Legal Opinion.—Mr McDavitt, tin; Hoard's solicitor, wrote that the Board could" accept the surrender of Mr MaeReynolds' lease and grant, a fresh lease to the Farmers' Co-op. Organisation S,ociety, with right of renewal, and thatthe Board could pay sinking fund out of general revenue. The directors of the Farmers' Co-oper-ative Organisation Society (Messrs Buckcridge, Corrigan and Coombridge) waited on tho Board and requested a permanent lease from the Board instead of a renewable one. The directors pointout that the Board had power to do this under a clause of the Harbors Act which gave tlhem rights within the first schedule of the Leasing Act to grant a lease with a perpetual right—practically a Glasgow lease. On the motion of Messrs Larnbic and Hurst, the Board agreed to grant a lease of section 47 (SJ/ 2 acres) at £25 per anauin, with perpetual right of renewal, valuation at the end of 21 years' term to be by arbitration and assessed on building site value for payment of rent. Loan Proposals. The committee (Messrs Hughson and Moore) presented a lengthy report on the financial proposal to raise a loan. The report stated that it would not be necessary to collect a full rate to provide for the £50,000 loan to carry out Mr Williams' scheme to build a breakwater.—The report was adopted. The proposals, as drawn up legally, wero fully discussed, and Hie clause to take oyer the jetty was made optional. A motion to strike out the clause was not seconded. The clause to pay all preliminary expenses in promoting the Optinake Harbor Board Bill was made optional. The loan proposals arc now ready to place before the ratepayers.
