Dardanelles Closed
RUSSIAN SHIPS BOTTLED IN THE BLACK SEA Received 6, 8.45 p.m. Constantinople, August S. Turkey lias'closed the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles to preserve her neutrality. The Dardanelles arc a narrow cbanti d separating Europe from Asia, and uniting the Sea of Marmora with the Archipelago. The strait lias a varying width of from one to four miles. A treaty concluded between the five Great Powers and Turkey in 1841 arranged that no non-Turkish ship of wat should pass the Dardanelles without (he express consent of Turkey. The closing of the Dardanelles at this juncture, whilst allegedly done to preserve Turkey's neutrality, would be as serious to Russia as a studied act of war if Russia has many warships in the Black Sea.
