j The racing statistics! compiled by the ! New Zealand Referee! were j this week, and, considering that Taranaki stables at present shelter so few really good horses the totals standing against Taranaki owners' names are fairly satisfactory. The local sportsman Mr. A. Alexander has had his best season to date, and comes out in eleventh place with; £2073, most of which Was won by liis Fordell-trained pair, bonny Helen (£1440) and Goodwin Park (£485), though Patronale accounted for &'£>. A comparative table shows that Mi . lexander's stake winnings have incn.isil by leaps and bounds, his first seuson (1909-1U10) beginning with a meagre £-250. This year's total is just double of last season's. Then we drop to "27 th place and find our old friend "Jervy" George, who holds his end up with £l6lO. Of this Royal Arms won £OOO and Crown Pearl £7lO. With ordinary luck this amount would have been considerably augmented, but horses hailing from the Omata stable have acquired the habit of running seconds and thirds in heart-breaking fashion. Bercola is responsible for Mr. J. R. L. Stanford's £1125, a tidy sum fur one horse. Another 'steeplechaser, Exotic, until recently trained in this province, notched ■'Air. If. S. Truman" £lOls, and another sole effort was Rewi Poto's £895 for "Mr. \V. Raleigh." Other Taranaki owners who kept the wolf from the door were:—Messrs L. Bremer £Bl-3, A. C. McDonald £BOO, P. Selwood £565, 0. Cox t-jtiO, W. Buckle £540, T. Loubv £540, J. T. Radford £535, "J. Britton" £5lO, C. Mr.mby £SOO, C. Jackson £4BO, A. W. Gillies £455, Mrs. C. Ruscoe £450, P. M. Mills £448, S. Brereton £3' JO, S. Pitt £3BO, R. Hicks £3BO, J. Brown £355, Trustees late J. Ryan £340, and J. PawBon £315, In comparison witli last year fair increases are shown by Messrs .1. George, S. Pitt, O. o®, and Mrs. C. Ruscoe, but Mr. J. R. Standford, the Ryan trustees and others have dropped on the scale. With a new season opening to-day "Moturoa" takes the opportunity of adding to congratulations for past winnings hearty good wishes to all sports for a record season in the year 1914-1915.
Reverting to the many game noddies that won the goldens fo: Taranaki sportsmen, we find pride of place held down firmly by Bonny lle'en, with £1440. Bercola £1125 and Exotic £lOls were the only others to top ihe thousand mark. Then follow: —Royal Arms £9OO, Rewi Poto £875, Kir Moselev £865, Lord Lupin £Bl5 and Ratana £BOO. Another drop to Crown Pearl £7lO, and then straggle Timothy £SOO, I'lay-otV 7:35, Kurnalpi £5-10, Wild Lupin £540. .Manowaknha £5:15, Patrouale £525 Haiulv Paul £50:1. Good l'ark £485, Astoi £4<iT,; llovnl Dragon £455. Cm-Mar £440 f l.'rb. rga £14*20.Z( te-; £39.1 Ineuni £390. Stvrax £3BO, Tree Lucerne £3li9, Sam Pan £:!(>.-) and Smilax £355.
CURRENT TOI'U'S. l.i-tiM;!. with Wa.l.tce Young iii the .-addle. was given a niHi- ami .1 hull' lliitU'r over tin- hurdles at Wanganui on 'lhiirsiliv illuming, ami acipiill.'d himac.f fairly well. The jumps were. lip to racing height, ami in cuiscipn nee heonta had 'to take on the trial oil his lonesome, lie took oil a triiie too soon in places, and there might have been some improvement in his landing, but if appears to be a safe conveyance over obstacles. Ml'. T.. ISristol- tells me Lei.uta is praetieally a certain starter in tJu- 1 ■ r->ii'l National Hurdle ace, but it is surely asking a new cluim a bis question to win such a race in his Iks'. .-taU over fences. When the acceptances for the Winter Oup eanie through surprise was expressed at the defectum of Stevedore. This was an error, it turns out. and the Riccarton horse is not only galloping well but is a certain starter.
The Grand National Hurdles question now appears more open by reason of Julian's entry into the list of dangerous ones. His displays at Kiccarton liaTe been quite brilliant this week, and what Kilnieny is doing wrdl Julian is uoing butter. Weights for the minor events at the National meeting appeared yesterday. A very even lot figure ill the Hunters' Hurdles, Ingenkender bending the list vith 11.7—n'vt a prohibitive impost. Cheddar lias 10.11 in the Tiiai Hurdles, but will have to be at his best to beat Golden Water, Morecambe. Me=cal and IJransfield at the weights. The Jumpers' l'lat Race, one mile and a half, will see n big crowd under under silk. If Ngatiruanui is on his best behaviour lie should run well. At the Great Northern meeting lie s-liouhl have won the .jumpers' l-Vjl Kaee "hands down." but a ba-il start saw him giving the field a •big break and second place was his at the finish. Others engaged that can '■" scale" for twelve furlongs are Admiral iSoult, l'laver and Helicon. A crowd of moderates figure 1 in the Enfield Steeple, and on his llawke's Hay running Daylight Hi.l does not appear to be hars.liIv treul"d.. Fashion Phut? is given a gieat chance, and Ronnv also reads wel'. The winner of the Avoiilie.id Handicap usually pays a remunerative price, and judging bv the crowd engaged this year's race .should follow precedent. George, Kigo Park and Banian l:,.ve been gaining places lately, but irost Taranaki sports will be interested in the running of the Maniapoto nag lincore. who was' some months ago a big liomn at llawera.
The Kuapani "rush" seems' to lie fizzling out, and news comes from (iisborne that. Chortle is making the jgrcy look a hack in morning "iillops. When Ruapaiii won a double against weak opposition at Oisliomo. -the Tt'ir Voni chopped their prices down to ridiculous figures, lint it is doubtful if much money went oil tlie fiisborne horse. The Winter Cup t:ik"s M)me winning. and those in-and-dried nags are ustialiv the ones which lake the count Ion,? before the lffig straight at Rieearton has been nearly covered.
Mr. .[. JiennettV prop',sal t<> reduce the charges to "outside" patrons at tlie Taranaki -T.C. meetings from two shillings to a humble "bob" is one which stould be "carried unanimously." Tt would be a good move to tlirow the outside gates open and let all desirable pcr-seiit-i in free. A couple of racecourse detectiws could get in their fine work at the gates, anil "block" tho-ie oil, the black list. The club? want liiggr attfiidances. The more people who attend t hp meetings the greater will be the totalizator turnover, a'nd the bigger the clulvs percentage. Clet the peop'e tt ejo by all means,—even if you have to drop to the political campaign act and sent motor cars for them!
