HILL CHEST DISASTER. By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Received 20, 5.5 p.m. New York, July 25. At the inquest on the Hill Crest mining disaster, the jury found that it was due to the explosion of gas and dust. The company had infringed the Mines Act.

From a personal investigation of the haoits of persons who died, from' eancer in the last two years, the medical health oilicer at Woolwich has arrived at the conclusion that the excessive use of alcohol and smoking lias some little effect in promoting cancer, hut they chiefly exert their injurious jiilluence's locally.
