MR. HILEY'S REPORT.
AN ALLEGED" FORECAST. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. The New Zealand Times is responsihle for the statement that it is understood the report of Mr. lliley, General Manager of Railways, will! contain several pieces of advice which make for important changes in the. detailed working of the system It is believed the report traverses in detail the present state of the main and branch lines. It is probable that material alterations will be recommended l in the running times of the Welliiigton-Naphr and North Island Main Trunk trains. A progressive programme of suburban trains.will be advocated ,to encourag' further traffic rather than merely m cater for present needs'. In fact, it iunderstood that the whole suggestion of the report will be the running of trains in excess of immediate reu/.tirements for the development of the coiintry and assisting suburban settlement. It is expected that fare in certain directions will be recommended, with th« free carriage of chi'drvn no to five years, cheaper fares for mmrentices, etc., The use of an automatic device for level crossings is exp'ained, and its adoption recommended' in' certain places. It is said that tlhje whole, tenor of the recommendations is based or. the expectation of a big railways loan being foreshadowed for this year. The Minister of Railways, interviewed respecting the publication of Mr. Hilev'a report, said he would be very surprised if some of the recommendations attributed to Mr. lliley did ultimately appear in his report,' which would' not be presented to Parliament till tlh'e first week in August. Beyond thi's the Minister declined to give any information.
